On the Day of your Surgery
You will report to the admitting office at the hospital.
- Any remaining hospital documentation will be completed and/or signed.
Remember:
- Please bring to hospital any relevant x-rays or imaging that you have at home.
- Do not eat anything 6 hours prior to your surgery
- You can only drink clear fluids up to 2 hours prior to your surgery
- Ensure that you have washed the affected leg and hip with a Betadine bath 24 hours prior to your surgery
- Please bring any regular medication/s with you to hospital, in the original packaging.
- Do not shave the surgical area, the surgical site will be shaved for you, prior to your surgery at the hospital
- Please do not use any skin moisturisers, cream or lotions at or around the surgical site.
- Please remove jewellery if possible, and do not bring any valuables with you.
- Please bring to hospital any crutches that you have at home, and may need following surgery.
From the admitting desk, you will be brought to the Preoperative area.
The nursing staff will be there to assist and prepare you for surgery.
- She will have a check list to complete and will confirm your identity and the operation that you will be having.
- You will typically be asked on several occasions which knee or hip will be operated on- this is simply a precautionary step to prevent any confusion.
- The nurses will weigh you and give you a surgical gown, compression stockings (to reduce the risk of DVT or clots), and a surgical cap to put on.
Closer to the time of surgery, you will be wheeled on a bed into the anaesthetic bay.
- The anaesthetist will ask you questions regarding your medical and surgical history, and prepare you with any pre-medications that may be required.
- To reduce the risk of deep venous thrombosis (DVT or blood clots), intermittent compression sleeves will be placed on your legs. These will help to maintain good circulation. The sleeves will be used while necessary in the hospital.
- The area will be marked by Dr Kulisiewicz when he sees you.
