Recovering from surgery

Returning Home

  • Please ensure that you take all of your belongings home, including any medications kept with the nurses for dispensing, and x-rays.
  • The discharge date will be determined by Dr Kulisiewicz and may vary from one patient to the next. It is dependant on factors such as: a patient’s ability to mobilise independently, adequate pain control, and the level of available support at home. Various unforeseen factors may result in the delay of a patient’s discharge.
  • Please ensure that you have arranged for someone to take you home. Furthermore, it is important that someone is available to stay with you for the first few nights while you put a routine in place.

Goals in the Acute (0-2 weeks) Phase of Recovery

  • Wound healing
  • Full weight bearing
  • Reduce Swelling
  • Regain full range of motion
  • Promote muscle control

Post-Surgery Timeline

  • You will be required to begin mobilising on the same day as your surgery. A physiotherapist will approach you about getting out of bed whilst you are on the ward.

  • Blood tests and an x-ray of the knee replacement are done

  • 24 to 48 hours following surgery, you will be taken off your IV antibiotics.

  • At 10 to 14 days post-surgery you will have an appointment with Dr Kulisiewicz’s nurse. The nurse will check your wound/s and remove any sutures or clips that are still in place.

  • At 3 weeks clexane injections or xaralto medication is ceased.

  • At 6 weeks post-surgery you will be required to have an x-ray and an appointment with Dr Kulisiewicz to check your progress and address any concerns.
  • If at any stage a patient has any concerns, they are encouraged to call Orthosports ACT on 02 6162 0807 and a secretary will ensure that any issue is addressed by the relevant person.
