Total hip replacement surgery involves removal of the diseased or damaged hip joint, and replacement with titanium and ceramic components. After this procedure patients will have restored movement and function of the joint (without stiffness), and will be able to walk or perform daily activities without debilitating pain.
While DAA hip replacements have been performed for over 50 years around the world, it is relatively new to Australia. Dr Kulisiewicz has undertaken extensive training and has been successfully performing DAA Hip replacements for over 6 years, with hundreds of these procedures being carried out over this time.
Hip Replacement Options
The history of Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) surgery dates back almost 100 years. The introduction of the “modern” hip replacement surgery by Sir John Charnley during the 1960’s, has seen this surgery evolve to become one of the most reproducible surgical interventions that surgeons perform. The combination of technological and surgical technique advancements, now allow orthopaedic surgeons to perform the hip replacement with reliable and consistent results, proven by decades of scientific research.
Whilst there are numerous hip prosthesis on the market and various surgical techniques available that can provide excellent results, Dr Kulisiewicz’s philosophy is to preserve the patient’s anatomy, via the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA). This technique is associated with less postoperative pain, quicker recovery, lower postoperative infection and dislocation rates compared to other surgical approaches, as it does not violate the muscles and tendons around the hip joint.
Importantly, as can be observed in the rates provided by the Australian Joint Registry, this approach does not have higher revision or complication rates compared to other techniques.
Anterior Hip Replacement
The Direct Anterior Approach is a surgical technique that allows Dr Kulisiewicz to perform Hip replacement surgery while preserving the muscles and tendons around the hip joint.

Posterior Hip Replacement
Posterior Hip Replacement is usually used as a revision surgery. These surgeries are mainly for those not suitable for direct anterior hip replacements.
